How to Find Your Creative Biz Niche

Trying several creative business niches when you’re starting your business is normal. It’s like finding your soul mate, sometimes it takes one look to meet them, sometimes it takes many heart breaks. Umm… was I just speaking my heart out? Anyways… This is a 1000-ish words post, you can save and read it for later by pinning this image.

Although I have been a lover of all patterned things; nature, fabric, building, paper, and more. I did not know that pattern design exists, that someone really makes a life by drawing (or creating) patterns to be applied to products. Because I didn’t even realize that someone made those patterns I was loving in my stuffs.

There are three questions you want to answer to decide your niche:

1. What do you love?

Let’s start here. You love a lot of things, that’s no doubt. List them. It can be a hobby, it can be an object, or can be someone significant. You can find, dig in more and explore the inspirations around it. For example:

You love baby? What do you love about baby? Their cute clothes, their cute room or bedding?

You love drawing? What kind of drawing is it? Quick doodles? Detailed and realistic drawing? Where would you imagine your drawing shown or appears?

2. What do you excel at?

If you’re busy and you want to start a business, you don’t want to mess with your plate by adding more stuff like “learning Arabian” because you want to open an middle east-themed cafe that uses Arabian languaged menu. Pick a thing that you’re good at to higher the possibility of starting your business ASAP.

However, if you’re really into stuffs that you aren’t excellent at, then you should learn. If you choose this path, to learn a thing (whether to perfect your skill or start from zero), there is few things you should note: plan your investment carefully.

Investments not only means money, it means time, money, and efforts. 

Consider and adjust these three things as you go with your study or learning plan.

  • When are you planning to start your business? How much time have you got?
  • How much efforts you can dedicate each time of the day, the week, or month?
  • Do you have any other current chores or responsibilities? As a stay at home mom? Your day work? Or school?
  • How much money are you willing to spend for this? What are the source of the money? How fast should you be able to earn this amount?

Some things are adjustable and vice versa. For example, if you need to run your business soon because you have no day job and need to pay the rent, then niches that require you to learn first, especially for a lengthy period or cost some fortune should be avoided. That might not be the best decision.

3. What difference do you want to make? What do you want to help people with?

In order to get your products or services bought. It should be wanted.

And in case of creative business, the reasons people want your stuffs or services can be improving esthetics and functionality (of their house, room, work, and more) or organizing their stuffs or works, streamlining things.

Now that you got your niche, refine it by…

Describing your ideal customer

Ideal customers are the people who most likely will drool over, pay for, and love your stuffs/services.

Not everybody who buys your stuffs or pays you to do things meet this characteristics, but still, they will own several similar characteristics compared to your ideal customers.

By describing your ideal customer, it will be easier to you to craft sales pitches, put your ads out there (if you need to), pick a place to show off, hang out, and sell, or perfect your offer so that it becomes irresistible to them.

Let’s take a step back a little bit with your niche.

For example, if you want to sell Scandinavian style nursery wall posters.

  • Who would love to buy it? Mostly it’s new moms who love clean, white, simple, or Scandinavian style home decoration.
  • Why? My reason can be second time moms are not as excited as first time moms; dads usually let moms decide decoration things; non moms probably will only buy as a gift, so less sales from these people, so on, so on.

Now take 10 minutes to answer these questions:

  1. What do your ideal customer do for living?
  2. How old are they? Are they women, men, kids, grandmas, etc?
  3. What do they value in life? What ticks them to purchase?
  4. What problems are they struggling with? How can my products help them?
  5. Where do they hang out? Where do they browse stuffs? Where do they shop?
  6. How much do they earn?

These questions are specific and will help you along your way of business building to keep your products well aligned. They will also help you answer many questions when you’re trying to set up your business.

However, I want to add few things here:

1. Don’t try to help or please everybody

It’s tempting to try to meet everybody’s need. Helping everybody. But besides it’s not possible to please everybody, to your customers, your service or product can be confusing. So to you when you are trying to expand or grow your business. Focus on one specific niche and be excellent at it. People will recognize and remember you for it.

2. You can adjust your business anytime

As long as you really put the effort to decide on a niche that resonates with you, defines you, really what you want to do, you love, and has a market in it, it doesn’t matter. You can adjust anytime later. Because… (let’s continue with number three below)

3. Better starting with a good enough NOW, rather than waiting for a perfect which may never come

The title says it. If you are a perfectionist (or simply a procrastinator) like me (uuugh…), feeling 100% happy all the time with your niche is almost impossible. Most of the time, to get the work going, you need to just start. As long is a good enough, than it’s good enough. Perfect may never come, and if you’re waiting for it, your biz may never start and you may never earn from it, as well.

Just start, you will learn about your customers by offering them your stuffs, tweaks can be made along the way, and your creative biz will grow. Good luck!
